Join us for a day exploring some of the hidden jewels of southern Dartmoor. Our course for this day will lead us through secret valleys and ancient woodland. Hear of Water Spirits and of encounters with the Devil, pick our way from Mediaeval farmstead to standing stones via rushing brooks. The cry of Buzzards and tales of the lives of those that lived and worked here over the Millennia. We shall visit and read some of the locations in Alice Oswald's epic poem "Dart" and then at day's end with crackling fire and good food we will relive the day and dream of other adventures. This 25 km (15 miles) day, there will be some steep hills and it will mainly be on paths or roads. The route may change due to weather conditions. And if the party is strong and confident we may go off piste for an adventure or two. Today sees us traversing some of the higher ground of eastern Dartmoor, our route goes above 1500 foot several times, but there will also be respite in woodland glades and river filled valleys. we shall be following in the footsteps of miners and our Bronze Age ancestors. We will discover stone circles and Victorian mines, and we will share stories of conflict and peace time spanning 4000 years, while we follow paths that are thought to have remained unchanged since before the Normans set foot on the land. and as our muscles tire and are feet turn for home our minds can start to imagine the warmth and savour of the evening meal ahead. This is a 25 km ( 15 miles) day mostly on moorland paths, there will be some sections on lanes and some section will cross open moorland without paths. There will be something approaching a thousand metres of ascent and descent throughout the day, it will be a full day but we will aim for a pace that can be enjoyed.
